Macedonian flag

Standard Macedonian has existed only since 1945. Before its standardization, Macedonian was considered a Bulgarian dialect. The Macedonians used the Western Macedonian dialect, which is the least similar to Bulgarian, as the basis of the standard language.

Macedonian language is written in the Macedonian Cyrillic alphabet. One of the codifiers and founders of the Macedonian literary language was Blaže Koneski – a scholar, writer, philologist and linguist.

One of the specificities of the Macedonian language (as well as of Bulgarian) is that the article, a special type of word implying the category of definiteness, follows the noun as a suffix , in contrast to English, French and German, where the article is placed before the noun.
