Japanese letters

Japanese is called “Nihongo”, the term derived from the words “ni” (day, sun) “hon” (source, book) and go (language, speech), and its translation is “the language of Japan”. Due to isolation of Japanese islands, the language was isolated from any external influence for a long time and therefore it is not associated with any other language; it belongs to Japanese family of languages together with Ryukyuan language.

The emergence of Japanese is associated with extinct languages that were spoken on the Korean Peninsula and in Manchuria. At the beginning, Japanese language was called Jamatokotoba and had a small number of phonemes, but it had more combinations of phonemes than contemporary language. Later, it was influenced by Chinese language which resulted in the fact that contemporary Japanese language contains more than half of words originating from Chinese, and only 35% of words having the source origin.
